Travel to Sweden by ferry in a relaxed way

Anyone travelling to Sweden has several options. Besides flying and driving all the way by road, the ferry is especially convenient for many holidaymakers. It often makes the journey more relaxed and gives you more flexibility at your destination, especially if you bring your own car.

Which route works best depends mainly on your starting point in Germany and your personal preferences. Some travellers want to reach Sweden as quickly as possible. Others prefer to enjoy a longer crossing and let their holiday begin on the way.

Which ferry connection suits your trip?

For travelling to Sweden by ferry there are essentially two options. You can either sail directly to Sweden or first cross to Denmark and then continue by car. Both options have their advantages.

If you prefer a short crossing, the route from Puttgarden to Rødby is a particularly fast option. The crossing takes about 45 minutes and is ideal for travellers from northern or western Germany. After arriving in Rødby you continue by road. It takes roughly two hours to reach the Öresund Bridge towards Sweden.

For holidaymakers from eastern Germany, departures from Rostock, Travemünde or Sassnitz are often a good choice. Depending on where you live, this can make the journey much more convenient and help you break up the overall distance in a sensible way.

Via Denmark to Sweden

The route via Denmark is easy to plan and suits many travellers’ everyday needs. An important connection here is the route from Rostock to Gedser. The crossing takes around two hours. Gedser lies about 40 kilometres from Rødby. From there, Sweden is also reachable in roughly two hours’ driving time.

This option can be worthwhile if a direct departure to Sweden does not match your own starting point very well. At the same time, the journey often becomes more flexible, with better options for planned breaks or stopovers.

Short or longer crossing?

Whether a short or longer ferry trip is better depends very much on your travel style. A short route like Puttgarden–Rødby saves time and gets you back on the road quickly. This is especially useful for families on a tight schedule or for anyone who wants to arrive as directly as possible.

Longer crossings can be more pleasant if you see the journey itself as part of the holiday. You do not sit in the car the whole time, you can move around on board and you often start the onward trip feeling more rested.

What to consider when planning

  • Choose the departure port that best fits your home location to avoid unnecessary detours.
  • Decide in advance whether a short crossing or more comfort on board is more important to you.
  • Plan your driving time after the ferry realistically.
  • Keep in mind that the route via Denmark can be a practical alternative for many travellers.

Travelling to Sweden by ferry offers several suitable options. If you coordinate route, departure port and driving time well, you usually reach your destination not only comfortably but also noticeably more relaxed. This is often an excellent way to start a car holiday and begin your trip to Scandinavia.
